ULC Standards and UL Standards are pleased to announce the joint publication of the First Edition of ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 1201, Standard for Sensor Operated Backwater Prevention Systems. This is the first joint Canada-U.S. standard in the plumbing sector.
A selection panel of Canada-U.S. industry representatives, including members of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH) and several U.S. organizations, evaluated project submissions and determined that standards development for sensor operated backwater prevention systems would benefit the greatest number of Canadian and American users. The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) announced the selection of this product area to be the focus of a joint Canada-U.S. Standard pilot project and awarded a contract to the SCC accredited standards development organization (SDO) ULC Standards, in collaboration with the SCC and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited SDO Underwriters Laboratories Inc., to develop this ground breaking standard. ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 1201 is approved as a National Standard by both ANSI and SCC.
This joint standard was developed and approved by the joint UL/ULC Technical Committee on Prevention of Storm and Sanitary Backflow, comprised of Canadian and American stakeholders, using a single joint standard development process fulfilling requirements of both SCC and ANSI. This streamlined standards development process eliminates duplication of effort associated with developing two separate standards in each country. The result is faster harmonization and a single standard meeting the needs of stakeholders in Canada and the United States.
ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 1201:2016, Sensor Operated Backwater Prevention Systems is available as a “view access” and downloadable PDF for Canadian IP addresses in both official languages at no cost until December 14, 2021.
